What's Keeping You From Taking the Next Step?

the next stepA lot can change in a week. Just 5 days ago, I was happily in a role I had had for a full year (which is actually surprising for me in my 4.5-year tenure at this startup) and had no intention of changing anything. Now it's Saturday morning and I'm waking up at the crack of dawn because I can't sleep from excitement for a new role I'll be taking. Or maybe it's stress. Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference between the two.

It was a tough decision at first to take this step, but after talking with some close friends and family about the opportunity (who were smart enough to even repeat back to me what I was saying - which was that I wanted to make this move), I realized that there was no question that I should do it.

So it's quite the coincidence that I found this article in Forbes this morning on The Six Enemies of Greatness (and Happiness) by the wonderful author and illustrator of Indexed. I actually was incredibly happy in my existing role (that's what made the decision so hard) but I realized that it was time to take a step, and this one seemed to be the right one.

Over the next couple of weeks, I'll be transitioning from my customer research role on the Product Team to go back to the Marketing Team to lead marketing for one of our key segments. I'm incredibly excited about the move, getting back into *doing* marketing and not just talking about marketing. I'm so glad that I got this experience and chance to work with the amazing people on our Product Team (that was the next step from when I was on the Marketing Team to begin with), and now it's time for me to take on a new challenge.

What's keeping you from taking your next step?
